History of the Modern Group

1970
1977 December Modern Corporation established by its founder, Akira Ohara, with a capital of 2,000,000 yen.
1978 January Operations begin, focusing on the production of instruction manuals and other print-related business.
1980
1983 February Production of manuals for overseas use begins.
  March Modern Creative Corporation established with a capital of 2,000,000 yen.
Production work begins, including design, illustration and print-ready film.
1987 December Modern Publishing Corporation established with a capital of 4,000,000 yen.
1988 July Monthly Dance View magazine first published by Modern Publishing, publishing business begins.
Modern Communications established (capital: 1,000,000 yen), focusing primarily on DTP and editing work.
  November Modern Communications begins DTP/editing operations using Apple Macintosh systems.
1990
1991 February Construction of the Modern Urawa plant completed, Print Division established.
1992 July Equipment expanded to include Apple Macintosh systems, imagesetters and automatic development machines, production system is digitized.
1994 February M&M Printers SDN. BHD. established by Modern as a wholly owned Malaysian-based subsidiary with capital of M$3,000,000.
1996 January Modern Communications structure merged into Modern Creative to provide enhanced production capacity (design, DTP, etc.) and to begin promotion of the multimedia and digital businesses.
  May Monthly Dance View magazine commemorates its 100th issue.
1998 February Modern Publishing starts publishing books.
  July Modern and Modern Creative corporations are integrated; editing and production divisions are unified and restructured.
2000
2000 April Management functions for Modern group companies are transferred to Modern Communications.
Management of the Modern Urawa plant is transferred to Modern Communications.
  October M&M Printers is awarded ISO9002 certification.
2001 September Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Premier Excellence Award (for a manual for Sharp Corporation) in the 2001 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
2002 February Yoshiki Ohara takes over from founder Akira Ohara as President of the Modern Group.
  March Modern and Modern Creative corporations are merged.
  September Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Excellence Award (for a manual for Casio Computer Co., Ltd.) in the 2002 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
2003 August Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Excellence Award (for a manual for Sharp Corporation) in the 2003 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
2004 September Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Excellence Award (for manuals for Sharp Corporation and WACOM) in the 2004 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
2005 September Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Superior Award in the 2005 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
2006 October Modern Publishing collaborates with the Nippon Television Network Corporation in the production of the "Shall We Dance" series.
2007 August Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Premier Excellence Award (for a manual for Casio Computer Co., Ltd.) in the 2007 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association
2008 August Modern Corp. is awarded the Departmental Excellence Award, Departmental Superior Award and Executive Committee Special Award (for manuals for Canon, Inc. and TOTO Ltd.) in the 2008 Japan Manual Contest held by the Japan Technical Communicators Association.
The monthly Dance View magazine celebrates its 20th anniversary by holding a banquet at the Tokyo Prince Hotel, attended by 200 guests from the industry.
2009 January Modern Publishing launches mail-order sales via "Dance View Market.com".
2010
2010 April Modern Corp. is awarded ISO9001 certification.
  October Modern Publishing holds its inaugural Dance View Fureai Ball.
2013 June Modern Publishing opens the Dance View Culture Studio in Nishi Nippori.
  November Akira Ohara retires as President of Modern Publishing and Yoshiki Ohara takes over as President.
2015 April The 3 Modern Group companies move their head offices to the current location and amalgamate.
  June Refurbishment of the M&M Printers equipment is completed and full-scale operation begins.
  August Modern Corporation reaches its 40th year.
